Micro-TESE
(Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction)
-
Micro-TESE, or Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction, is a surgical procedure used to retrieve sperm directly from the testes in cases of *non-obstructive azoospermia*, where sperm production is severely low or absent due to problems in the testes themselves. It involves using an operating microscope to carefully examine the testicular tissue and locate areas with active sperm production, which are then extracted.
-
When Micro-TESE Is Done?
Micro-TESE is typically performed when:
- A man has non-obstructive azoospermia, where conventional methods (like TESA or MESA) are unlikely to yield enough sperm.
- Previous procedures to retrieve sperm have been unsuccessful.
- As part of an IVF cycle with ICSI, especially when low or abnormal sperm production is the cause of infertility. -
Why Micro-TESE Is Done?
Micro-TESE allows a detailed examination of the testes under high magnification, which improves the likelihood of finding small areas of sperm production that might otherwise be missed. It is less invasive to the testicular tissue, reducing the risk of damage. This procedure has a higher success rate for retrieving viable sperm in men with non-obstructive azoospermia compared to other techniques, making it the preferred approach in severe cases of male infertility.
